Historic Lovejoy Quarry

Stonehaven surrounds one of two abandoned granite quarry pits that were operated by the Lovejoy Granite Company in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

At the turn of the century, Lovejoy was the largest of 15 commercial quarrying operations in the booming Milford granite industry. The company employed about 150 stone cutters who shipped out 800 rail car loads of cobblestones annually. There was a workman's camp, kitchens, railroad loading docks, and a blacksmith's forge to fashion stone cutting tools such as star drills, chisels, hammers and wedges.
